As Halloween approaches it seems a good time to review one of our favourite craft gins. Pigeon Fishers Vampyre Gin is not for the faint of heart. A craft gin in every sense of the word, small batch, crafted and cared for by Ade Cole who distils the Pigeon Fishers liquid on a small converted farm in Barlow, Derbyshire.
The Vampyre edition infuses the London Dry Pigeon Fishers gin with Sicilian Moro oranges. The liquid is then aged with Moro orange peel in American Oak to give it an intense flavour.
If you are looking for a cloyingly sweet fruity drink which makes you think you aren’t drinking, move on! Pigeon Fishers Vampyre is a gin for people who enjoy the alcohol of gin. Juniper and pepper are strong on the nose and the bitter orange flavour comes through at the end.
I find this gin is best enjoyed like a fine whiskey, sipped neat with a cube or two of ice in front of a roaring fire with a good book. Perhaps a Bram Stocker or Mary Shelly given the folklore associated with the name of the gin.
Alternatively, it works very well served long with ginger ale. A perfect companion for autumn, a gentle ginger pairing complements the orange and enhances the spices.
